Teacher Trainer Workshop on Africa

At the 1994 New York African Studies Association 18th annual conference held in Ithaca, New York and hosted by the Africana Studies and Research Center, Cornell University, the theme was "Positive Perspectives for the 21st Century." The objective of the conference was to capture the "continuing challenges of overcoming the all too frequent negative images and stereotypes about Africa and [to reflect] on Africa’s past and current difficulties [and] achievements in a more balanced and informed way." With this objective in mind, the conference planners organized a Teacher Training Workshop on Africa as an integral part of the conference for K through 12 teachers, administrators and staff. The Teacher Training Workshop was a success and was well received by the participants.

Almost a decade later some of the same issues examined at the 18th NYASA conference in 1994 still linger and now Africa faces more complex issues arising from globalization of economics, politics, social dynamics, health issues and technology. The 27th NYASA Annual conference 2003, will have a Teacher Training Workshop on Africa for K through 12 teachers, administrators and staff to examine pertinent issues facing Africa in a globalized world.

Major leading African scholars have been invited to present and lead the workshops in discussing issues such as: Teaching About Africa, African Centered Education Theories, Africana Teaching Methodologies, Africana Global Curriculum Content, Africana Curriculum Development, Africana Teaching Materials, Resources for Teacher Continuing Education, and Teacher Net-Working.

We encourage all educators to attend. Workshop sessions are scheduled for Friday, April 4th 2003 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. beginning with a breakfast at 7:30 a.m. A reception is scheduled at 5:00 p.m. at the Africana Studies and Research Center, 310 Triphammer Rd., Ithaca, New York.

Registration Fee for Teacher Training Workshop: $25.00
