The publication, 3x3: Three Artists/Three Projects, David Hammons/Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons/Pamela Z, accompanies the exhibition organized by Salah M. Hassan and Cheryl Finley and presented as the American Participation in the sixth Dakar Biennial, May 7-June12, 2004 in Dakar, Senegal.
The publication will include commissioned essays as well as essays dedicated to discussing the work of the participating artists, in addition to biographies of the artists, short artists' statements, manifestos, and other historical documents related to the life and work of the participating artists and the conceptualist movements in Africa. A bio-bibliography, and color and black and white reproductions of the artists' works will also be included.
Nine critical essays have been commissioned by some of the leading scholars, curators and critics in the fields of contemporary art and new media, including Sally Berger, Maria Fernandez, Manthia Diawara and George Lewis. In addition to the essays, there are interviews with Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons and Pamela Z as well as chronological biographies for each artist. One remarkable feature of the David Hammons volume is the 'Spirit Writing' that he is contributing, the first offering of its kind by the artist to a publication such as this.
